About the professions

The professions of audiology and speech-language pathology became regulated health professions in Prince Edward Island on August 1, 2023. All health professionals practising in those fields in the province must be registered with the College of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of PEI.

Audiology

Audiology is the health profession in which a person applies particular knowledge, skills and judgment in:

  • Assessment of auditory and vestibular functions,
  • Treatment and prevention of auditory and vestibular dysfunctions,
  • Activities to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment auditory, vestibular and communicative functions and auditory and vestibular health, and
  • Conducting research, education, management or administration incidental to performing the above-listed activities.

Registered health professionals specializing in audiology may use the title audiologist as their designation.

Speech-language pathology

Speech-language pathology is the health profession in which a person applies particular knowledge, skills and judgment in:

  • Assessment of speech and language functions, related communication disorders and swallowing functions,
  • Treatment and prevention of speech and language dysfunctions and disorders,
  • Activities to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment oral motor or communicative functions, and
  • Conducting research, education, management or administration incidental to performing the above-listed activities.

Registered health professionals specializing in speech-language pathology may use the titles speech-language pathologist and speech therapist as their designation.
